DST 60404 Anatomy and Character Structure

Instructions (MIB)

Exercise 1 - Character Design Concept

Our first exercise is to create an original character that will be sculpted and used in the later projects. My first idea was to create a chibi-like character with demonic motifs such as horns. I decided to go look for references and inspiration from different sources.

I picked out some features that I liked such as the blacked out arms and long tail and decided to brainstorm some designs using the chibi model.

I decided to draw up a similar design but with a normal female character body type. This would allow me to to more with the anatomy. I made some changes to parts of the outfit and ended up with a design that I will be using later.

Project 1 - Skull & Body Mesh (Digital Sculpting Basics)
Skull

For the first part of Project 1, we are to model a skull as our first introduction to using ZBrush. It took a while to get used to the basic controls since I have never sculpted in 3D before, but after some weeks I was familiar with the tools.

My first attempt started with looking at references of skulls from different angles. Then I decided to sculpt my first skull.

At first It was difficult because the skull kept looking very disfigured. Eventually I realised that I should focus on the larger shapes before moving on with refining the details. After some more guidance from class lectures and YouTube, I managed to sculpt the skull with a somewhat realistic structure.

Body Mesh

For the second part of Project 1, we are required to sculpt a body mesh using simple shapes, which will slowly be refined to fit the body structure that we have drawn in Exercise 1. Since my character is a female with a skinny build, I started with small shapes, from rectangles to cylinders.

After forming the basic shapes to form my character, I proceeded with refining the body, merging the different subtools with each other to form a smooth model.

After making some changes to the model (such as changing the eye shape), I was done with the body structure of my character, so I can model the outfit on top of it next.

Project 2 - Outfit & Props Sculpting

For Project 2, we are to start sculpting the outfit for our character, based on the concept drawing from Exercise 1. Since my character is mostly wearing armor-like pieces, I used shapes with a sharp edge, and used the masking tool to create the bodice.

I also decided to start colouring to see how the colours would look with each other.

During this process, I also made the legs further apart from each other since in Project 1 they are too close together and it would have been difficult to sculpt the leg parts if I did not do that.

Final Project - Complete Character Sculpt

For the final project, we are required to pose the completed model of our character in a dynamic fashion, or in a way that is characteristic to them. I drew out some pose ideas that I could pose my character in.

I decided to choose the pose in the middle, as it looked like she was going to lunge at someone, and I liked how threatening it looked.

After rendering the illustration, I translated it into ZBrush, testing out some tools that can use in posing my character.
