3 Stop Motion Shorts
1. MILK CRATE - stop motion woodworking

This is one of the very first videos that introduced me to stop motion. I was impressed by how the person's movements were so consistent and the sounds were very satisfying to listen to. It really felt like the wood was just a piece of clay.

2. GRUFF | A Short Film by Righteous Robot

When I think of stop motion, I think about this person who makes and uses paper puppets in his films. I thought this was pretty impressive since I've never seen a stop motion done with paper before. The characters are so well-designed and each have their own features and characteristics. The paper puppets have hinges on each limb, and the creator even put eyelids on the characters. The dedication to his craft is admirable, especially when he spent 3 years making this, to cope with the death of his father.

There was a clear direction in the story and everything was so well-put together. If I had not seen the behind-the-scenes footage of this animation, I would have thought this was done in an animation program.

3. HoyoFair | "Toy Salesman"

This stop motion animation is fairly new as part of the annual HoyoFair collation consisting of fan works, and it's a very fun watch, as it follows the character Childe, from Genshin Impact, as he brings joy to the children by giving them toys while protecting the villagers from monsters. When I first watched it, I was amazed by the quality of this animation. The puppet looks just like Childe in the game. The monsters here, the Koshchei, were designed to look terrifying, meant to scare away the children living in the village with their sharp beaks and black, feathery silhouette. The sound design and voice acting were fantastic, and it makes you feel like you're in the same snowy lands as Childe.

Final Project: Stop-Motion Animation

For the final project we are required to make a stop-motion animation using any materials that are accessible to us. Paper is a common medium to make stop-motion animations but I have decided to save some time by using some small plushies I had as the characters. I settled on making the background with paper and cardboard.

I had the fun idea of making a short murder mystery plot where there is no murderer at all, so I drew out a storyboard and went to work on crafting the props I needed using paper and cardboard.

At the same time I decided to make some paper masks for the plushies so I can change their facial expression. I cut out small rectangles and covered the surface with tape so I can draw and stick on some new facial expressions easily. It looks silly but I think it works with the sypnosis I am going with.

I decided to decorate the set with some random craft materials I had to make it look sort of like a rich person's house, with interesting picture frames and a big flower pot. This idea came to mind after thinking about how many murder mystery stories take place in mansions or other rich venues. For the floor I cut out some carpets and glued some lace to make it look expensive.

I drew out a big spill that could cover a lot of the carpet and coloured it with red to make it look like blood. I did not have dark enough red for the colour I wanted so I resorted to using a dark red lip stain I had lying around. I wouldn't consider it a waste since I only used a little bit.

After that I was ready to shoot the scenes.

Final Stop Motion

Reflection

I think this final project is very fun as I get to try out stop-motion animation which is not an easy form of animation from what I have seen. It takes a lot of time to draw out a storyboard and make the props that didn't already exist. There's also the process of taking consisent shots with any device you are using to shoot so that there's no abnormal frames that would confuse the viewer.

Overall, I think this is a fun project to end the module. We get to use what we have learnt and apply it to these projects. all the class materials and exercises that were given to us definitely helped me to understand this module much better, besides my past experience with editing video and sound in my own personal projects. I got to learn some things in Adobe Premiere Pro while doing these projects so these skills will be helpful in future projects.
