TASK 1 : The Vormator Challenge

"Vormator is the ultimate challenge of your creativity. The aim of this project is to give each student the chance to create a stunning piece with limited means."

Objective: Create a character using Vormator shapes.

To begin, we were told to first trace out the shapes below using the tools available in Illustrator. After I finished tracing them out, I grouped them together at the side so I can grab each shape easily without them blocking the canvas.

Shapes Provided for Vormator Challenge

Then we were to come up with a design for a monster/creature by assembling these traced out shapes. There were some rules implemented when creating our monster;

  • Can rotate, flip and duplicate the shapes
  • Must use all the shapes
  • Scaling is allowed, but proportionally
  • Can add, subtract, intersect and group shapes
  • Use of colour is unrestricted
  • Can use gradients
  • Can use filters or effects
I started experimenting by taking some of the bigger shapes and grouping them together to create something that resembles a body. I made use of some of the tools in Illustrator to create some elements I wanted, such as the eyes, in which I used the knife tool and clipping mask to make them. I put some of the other shapes together and made up a colour scheme which I figured would look pleasing to the eye and came up with my initial design.

Process Work

Initial Pokemon Design

I decided I wanted my monster to look a bit different so I made some changes to match the vision I had in my head. I also played around with the shadow effect at the same time.
Progress Work

Finally I gave it a tail as a final touch to the design. My Pokemon monster has been created.

TASK 2 : Pokemon Card

Objective: Place your Vormator character (Pokemon) into a Pokemon card composition, incorporating foreground, midground, and background elements. You may also create a new shape not bound by the Vormator rules or shapes.

I had the idea of putting my Pokemon in a setting where everything is dry and isolated, where there are dead trees everywhere and the land is dry while my Pokemon rests in a cave surrounded by mountains. I decided my Pokemon to wield the fire element, and fire can burn everything in its path, like trees and grass, so that's how my idea came about.

I went to look at references for the idea I had and tried to recreate it in Illustrator. This time I made good use of the gradient tool.

Progress Work in Illustrator

For the final design, I had initially wanted to put fire around my Pokemon to show that it wields the fire element, but I thought it looked out of place so I scrapped it and decided that the final design looks better without it.

Final Design

To turn them into Pokemon cards, I downloaded high quality JPEGs of the final design and put them in a website that allows you to make a custom Pokemon card. I was not very familiar with Pokemon in general so I looked up inspiration from official cards and came up with my own stats.

The name I have given my Pokemon is 'Blazeron', because the word 'blaze' refers to a bright and strong flame, and I thought it fit my Pokemon very well.

TASK 3 : Fly Me to the Moon

Project Brief: You are to choose one song from the list below,- :
  • Fly Me to The Moon
  • The Way You Look Tonight
  • Come Fly With Me
  • Girl from Ipanema
  • New York, New York
-appreciate the song, hear it through and understand the lyrics. You are then required to sketch initial ideas, figure out a storyline, illustrate and compose and animate a 'moment' based on your understanding from the chosen song. This moment will be the album cover. Illustrated typography must be included. Foreground, midground and background must be considered and illustrated.

I chose New York, New York as the song I want to base my album cover on since I enjoy songs that are based around being in a city, especially one as big as New York. What I had in mind was a view of the city itself, lit up at night, following a line in the lyrics; "I wanna wake up in that city, that doesn't sleep."

I found some references and sketched out the idea I wanted to recreate in Illustrator. The moment shown in my idea is written above the sketch below.

Idea Sketch

I used my sketch to trace on Illustrator and formed buildings, a bridge, a riverside and a boat. I made the colour scheme simple with some contrast to show the night sky about to be broken by dawn.

Design Outline

This was only the initial design so I didn't like it as much as I'd thought since it looked plain.

Initial Design

I decided I wanted to give it a different vibe so I changed the colour scheme completely and gave it a retro style given the vibe of the song. It would fit as the album cover more than my initial design, and I figured it would look visually pleasing to the eye as well, with the choice of colours I had in mind.

Here are the references I took inspiration from:

Modified Design

The modifications of the colours were easy to do, and I added some small stuff like the lights in the background and moon as final touch. I was pretty satisfied with the final result.

Task 4 (Final Project) : Comic Cover and Animated One-Page Intro

"A motion comic, or animated comic, is a form of animation combining elements of print comic books and animation. Individual panels are expanded into a full shot while sound effects, voice acting, and animation are added to the original artwork"

Objective: You are to select a story from the short storied of Edgar Allan Poe and you are to create:
  • Comic Cover Page
  • Animated One Page Intro
Animated Scope:
  • Parallax
  • Secondary Action
  • Animated Background
After reading through some stories, I decided to do The Black Cat because I really like the story and I already had an idea in mind while reading it. I wanted to capture the moment where the black cat discovers the body of his owner's wife stuffed inside the wall. I wanted to give my comic panel a 'film noir' style, in which this genre of media is mainly captured in black and white.

Idea Sketch

I got permission to add blood to my design, so I proceeded to bring my idea to life. The bright red blood will be quite the contrast with the black and white setting. The whole process for the comic cover and animated page took a long time to do but i managed to finish it on time.
