Task 1: Exploration

Design Principles
Gestalt Theory
It is the rule that describes how the human eye perceives visual elements to show how complex scenes can be reduced to simpler shapes. Our brain will perceive a series of individual elements as a whole and will show us what we should be seeing.

This illusion by William Ely Hill titled 'My Wife and My Mother-In-Law' shows an ambiguous figure, and according to how you view it, you can either see a young woman looking away or an elderly woman looking forward.

Contrast
Contrast is the juxtaposition of very dissimilar elements since without it, the visual experience will look unattractive and monotonous. Contrast helps to provide a visual interest, emphasise a point and express content.

Emphasis
Emphasis is used to create dominance and focus in a design by using various elements such as colour, shapes or value.

Balance
Balance refers to the distribution of visual weight in a work of design and it is the visual equilibrium of the elements that causes the image to appear balanced.

Repetition
Repetition refers to the action of repeating something that has already been said or written. In design, it makes any work seem active because it creates rhythm and pattern within the work. There should be a variety of design elements to keep the rhythms look exciting and avoid monotony. Pattern increases visual excitement by enriching surface interest.

Movement
The path the eye follows is the way a design leads in, around and through a composition. Movement in an image occurs when objects look like they seem to be moving with the presence of some elements. The elements that show movement come in the form of shapes, forms, lines and curves.

Manga Excels at making movement look so impactful by so I decided to include some panels from Chainsaw Man by Tatsuki Fujimoto as an example.

Harmony & Unity
Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of the design fit together, such as having a similar theme, aesthetic or mood. Unity is the repetition of particular elements throughout the design to pull the look together, creating a theme.

Symbol
It is a sign, shape or object to represent something else to convey information, or even a whole story.

Word & Image
Imagery is important when it comes to design and it goes hand-in-hand with typography, which is the design and arrangement of text to convey a message. The proper combination of the two will deepen the meaning of the design because of the visual hierarchy and balance in a work of design.

SDG 14
(
Life Below Water)
is about using the natural bodies of water via conservative and sustainable means. This includes reducing marine pollution and ocean acidification, end overfishing and conserve marine and coastal ecosystems.

I chose this artwork because the idea of a magical and mythical being like a mermaid in a polluted ocean gives you a sense of despair and regret because only we, as humans, are responsible for this. While mermaids are not real, this artwork should still serve as a reminder for us to reduce the pollution happening to the ocean and also be conservative about it. We should stop throwing trash into the ocean if we want to save it. The same can be said about factories that are pouring toxic waste into the water.

The design principles found in this artwork are Contrast, Emphasis, Repetition, Movement, and Symbol.
