Project 4 - Self-Titled

Idea Development

Write a biography about yourself.

INTRO

Tell us about yourself.

My name is J Xin and I will be turning 20 this August. My hobbies include drawing, watching anime, listening to music and reading books or online stories. I consider myself as an introvert and someone who procrastinates a lot.

PARAGRAPH

1

What is your passion?

My passion is to go into a professional creative field in the future, but only time will tell and my passions may have changed by then.

PARAGRAPH 2

What motivates you to achieve your dream?

I haven’t figured out what part of my dream I want to achieve yet.

SUMMARY

How do you want to visualise your dream in your artwork?

I think my dreams can be very messy, so I figured I should try visualise it in my artwork.

Write a statement about your work.

INTRO

Tell us about your work.

I consider my work to be somewhat silly and cartoony but I think it matches what I had in mind.

PARAGRAPH 1

What is the concept behind it?

I want to visualise some parts of me in the way I see myself, and most of the time I find myself disassociating from reality, where I will end up in a place that’s bizarre but peaceful, and has the calming but lonely  vibe to it.

PARAGRAPH 2

What is the message you want people to understand?

Escaping from reality from time to time is a nice feeling, and it’s okay to immerse yourself in your own little world for a bit.

SUMMARY

What is your motto/quote?

Life is too short to let other people’s opinion control your life. Just be yourself.

Mood Board

I wanted to have a comic-style poster, but it's not gonna be an actual comic. I want it to be half-comic/cartoony and half-realism. It's the cycle of entering and breaking out of reality that I'm usually experiencing that made me want to go with this idea, and I love reading comics (including manga and webtoon) so this fits really well in defining who I am as a person.

This feeling fits the 'vaporwave' aesthetic as well, given its visuals that are literally out of this world, and I wanted to incorporate that aesthetic into my poster too.

Design Direction
Sketch your mock-up poster.

I though the first idea was pretty cool, since it would have me posing at the front, but it would mean covering half the comic panels and I was planning to put some content in them, so I scrapped the idea. I decided to go with my second sketch since it can balance between cartoony and realism, with me being in one of the comic panels above the realistic water and clouds.

I also made one of the panels in the format of music player since I enjoy listening to music as another way to escape reality for a little while.

Create a digital poster based on your sketch.

I wanted to add some fun things to the water since it looked empty. I added cartoon floaties, of a flamingo and a duck with sunglasses, and on them I put some of my personal interests which I have lost interest in a few years ago, but wish to pick back up again, which would be reading physical story books and playing the violin.

Artist Statement:

I am pretty satisfied with the final result. It's messy, but it's pretty accurate in representing me as a person.

I like to immerse myself in the music I listen to so I decided to make that the main focus on my poster. It feels like a voice in my head dragging me out from reality and into a more isolated world.

I spent the most time on the background as I wanted to make the atmosphere look dreamy and surreal.
