Task 3 : Design
About Task 3
After analysing the chosen design in task 2, the final step is to produce a design using any medium of art, excluding photography, that can either be directly inspired by the chosen design, or as a reaction to it to convey a visual message. Some of the design principles learnt from task 1 can also be incorporated to the final design.
Ideas
I began sketching out some ideas that I had in mind that can have some correspondence to the artwork that I chose in Task 1. Some of these ideas have similar characteristics, while some are completely different from the others.
In the end, I decided to go for the first sketch that I made, since it was an idea that came to me first after looking up some reference photos. Both the lecturer and I agreed that the first idea is the best one, and that it will show for a very impactful message.
Visual References
After settling on the idea, I searched for some references with visual elements that I want to put in my final artwork.

Final Design and Rationale
While I love the distant shot of the mermaid laying in the middle of a polluted ocean in Ana Barboza's artwork, I wanted the expression of the mermaid to be the main focus, so I decided to go for a close-up portrait instead.
I put heavy emphasis on her face by showing adding some light that managed to break through the polluted water and hit her face. Her striking blue eye is quite the contrast and also very prominent in such a dark and murky environment. Her bright pink hair would have also been an eye-catcher, but due to the filthy state of the water, it took away the saturated beauty of it.
Since this is set under the water, I added some water patterns to indicate that the trash around her are moving, and that it looks like these trash items are floating towards her. I put some yellowish-green gradient in these patterns as another indication of the state of the water around her.
To make the overall portrait look balanced, I put in an equal amount of trash on both sides. Plastic is a common item that is thrown into the water, so I even included a discarded plastic bag on each corner to balance it out more.
