Task 2 : Visual Analysis
This task is about analysing and noting down the design principles that can be found in the artwork I chose in Task 1. This also includes analysing the size, placement, purpose and effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal I chose to do.
Visual Analysis
As someone who is a big fan of the general aquatic scene, I enjoy anything that has to do with the ocean. Many forms of media in surrounding the ocean have been created over these years, an example being cartoons (e.g. The Little Mermaid). However, unlike in the little mermaid, mermaids would not be able to live happily ever after if they were to exist in the real world, where water pollution would be inevitable.
In this artwork, the mermaid is the first thing you will see that captures your attention. She is floating in a body of water, and all around her is rubbish that is moving around her in a swirly, circular motion, and these swirly lines are drawn in a way that blends in with the water. This is a very dull, and desaturated artwork, with its main colours consisting of orange, yellow and green, which is not a very aesthetic colour choice for a piece that is mainly focused on the ocean, which is something we usually perceive as being a vibrant blue and green. The emphasis is placed on the mermaid, as she's the only thing in the artwork that stands out because she has brighter colours when compared to the murky, dull waters. Because of this, the contrast between the mermaid and the space around her is striking. Movement can be seen from the yellow swirly patterns that leads to the top of the floating mermaid, which indicates that the rubbish that it is carrying along with it is slowly moving behind her. There is a repetition of plastic waste and other small rubbish all around the mermaid. The symbol for this artwork can be the mermaid as she's the main subject here, and she can also be the symbol for SDG 14 in general, since a mermaid facing the problem of water pollution can convey a message for people and become a wake-up call for us to take action.
Ana Barboza drew this as a call to protect our seas, which is an important part of the ecosystem of the planet and our survival. For this artwork, she quoted: "The sea itself has so many creatures that can be as magical as mermaids. Can you imagine a mermaid dying because of our waste? Would that make the problem more real?"
